Cartoon woman flexing arm with banners

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

The design shows an animated character with glasses and a red polka dot bandana flexing one arm in front of a yellow starburst. Three banners carry the words I'M A STRONG, SMART, SENSUAL and WOMAN in black lettering. Bold black outlines and flat blue, red, yellow and skin-toned fills give it a traditional look, set on a lower leg.

Our Maureen has never lost a bet on the Saturday fish quay, and she made sure the whole pier knew it before she rolled up her sleeves. Forty crates of mackerel were stacked behind her stall on Tollgate Pier, and the gulls had already picked the two of us out as the afternoon's entertainment. The challenger was Dennis Pargeter from the crab boats, who had a forearm like a mooring bollard and a habit of humming while he won.

I tied my red spotted headscarf tighter, pushed my glasses up with one knuckle and set my elbow on the bait board. Dennis grinned at the crowd like he'd already bought the drinks. His first pull nearly took my shoulder off, and for a moment the whole quay went quiet except for the ropes creaking on the moored boats and the gulls shrieking over the ice house.

What he hadn't clocked was that I'd spent every Saturday since March hauling ice boxes up the slipway for my dad, and those boxes weigh more than Dennis's ego. I leaned in, let him feel the give in my wrist, then brought my arm down slow and steady, the way you'd lower a heavy net onto the slab. His knuckles hit the board with a sound like a dropped crate.

He paid up in a bag of mackerel, which I hung from the stall's hook as a trophy. Dad called it a waste of good fish. I called it the best morning's trade we'd had all year.
