The sponge had been in the galley longer than the new mate, which was the only argument I had when Mr Pryce wanted it binned. Square as a biscuit tin and the colour of custard, it lived in a steel bucket beside the fryer, soaking up grease and giving back nothing but a faint smell of onions. Nobody had ordered it. It had turned up on the gangway at Harwich in a crate of cleaning supplies, and by the third night of the crossing I had decided it was mine.

Pryce held his clipboard the way other men hold grudges. 'Inventory says two sponges, Dolan. I count one and a bucket of something that used to be a tea towel.' I told him the sponge was a company man. It had a tie, I said, pointing at the red stripe I had painted on it with a tin of ketchup that afternoon. He studied it for a long time. Then he studied the rota, which had me scrubbing the stern deck in forty knots of wind, and he sighed the sigh of a man who had lost a battle he had never wanted to fight.

We made the Hook at dawn with the sponge drying on the sill above the sink, its corners curled like a biscuit left out in the rain. Somewhere between the fish market and the gulls, the bucket went quiet. I fished it out and found it squashed flat and still smelling of onions, but a little less yellow, as if it had given the galley the last of its colour.

When I came back from the mess, a note sat on the rim in Pryce's square capitals. STAY ON THE STERN DECK. THE SPONGE GOES WITH YOU. Underneath, smaller: HE CAN KEEP THE TIE.
