Millhouse riding an eagle on the chest

Traditional · Chest · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows the cartoon character Millhouse from The Simpsons seated on the back of a grey and black eagle with spread wings. Two yellow banners frame the scene, one above reading EVERYTHING'S COMING UP and one below reading MILLHOUSE. The bold black outlines and solid fills are typical of traditional flash, with red, yellow, blue and grey ink. Partial script tattoos are visible at the edges of the frame on the surrounding skin.

Nobody aboard the Lydia Vane could remember who had painted the eagle on the bow, only that it had been grey and black since before the war, and that the cook, Ezra Pill, swore its wings moved in heavy weather. Ezra was small and sunny and wore wire spectacles mended with fishing line. When the North Atlantic turned foul in February he took to standing beside the bowsprit with a tin mug of tea, telling anyone within earshot that everything was coming up.

The third mate, Harrow, took it for a sickness. The pit props had shifted in the number two hold, and the ship limped for three days with a list to port while the gale tore the canvas off the lifeboats. Ezra kept cooking. He served porridge with a grin and carried the bosun a plate of kippers he had found at the back of the cold store, and whenever a man swore at the weather, he corrected him gently. Everything's coming up, he'd say. It's only a matter of which way.

On the fourth night the eagle's left wing worked loose from its bolts and began to bang against the hull. Harrow went forward with a lamp to lash it and found Ezra already there, wedged against the rail, sleeves rolled to the elbow, a coil of rope in both hands. Neither of them spoke. Ezra tapped the bird's painted eye with one knuckle, then pointed past the bow to where a thin grey line of light was starting along the horizon.

By morning the wing was secure and the ship was pointed at the light. Ezra had carved a word into the rail beneath the eagle's feet, small enough that only the spray would find it, and Harrow never learned whether he had meant the bird or himself.
