Two matching black line symbols on the hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together, showing a small black tattoo on each. The left tattoo shows a circle with crossing lines and small loops, while the right shows a circle set between two vertical bars with a horizontal line through it. Both designs use solid black ink with clean, even strokes against a dark background.

Nell had the rope off the bollard before the boat was level with the gate, and she didn't look up when her father shouted that the Mary Ann was too close. The water in the lock was still falling. Cold came off the stone walls with a smell of weed and iron.

The lock gate had a ring bolted to its post, and the rope went through the ring twice, then once around the bollard, the way Old Tobias had shown her the summer she was nine. "A knot holds a boat," he said, "a gate holds the water. You want both, and you want them to know each other." She had never understood that until the winter the ice cracked the bottom gate and her father stood on the towpath with his hands empty.
Ruth Garside came up the towpath the next morning with a barge of coal and nobody to steer it. She had been married to the Garside boy for a month before he went through the ice at Ashby. She stepped off onto the coping stone and held out a coil of new line. "You'll want this," she said. "The old one's rotten through."
They worked the gate together until the light went, Nell on the windlass and Ruth feeding the rope through the ring, the two of them hauling the water down one turn at a time. When the boat sat level with the lower pound, Ruth tied the last hitch and tapped the ring twice with her knuckle, the way you'd knock on a door you expected to open.
