Snow had sealed the Keld road by four o'clock, and by six the Hollin Inn held nine strangers, one dog and a coal supply that Nell Garside was already counting. She had run out of clean glasses before the second hour, and the fire had been fed so often that its smoke hung low under the beams like a second ceiling. Nobody was in a hurry to leave. The coach had gone into the drift at the bridge, and the rest of the evening belonged to whoever could be bothered to talk.

Tobias Quayle, a surveyor with ink on his cuffs, had spent the afternoon arguing with Ada Mireau, a schoolteacher heading north to a post she had not yet seen. The argument was about a timetable. It had long since stopped being about a timetable. They sat at opposite ends of the settle and refused to look at each other until Nell, tired of the sulking, cleared a table, found a pencil stub behind the till and dealt out a stack of beer mats.

"Noughts and crosses," she said. "Winner buys the next round. Loser stops sighing."

Ada took the crosses. Tobias took the noughts. Game after game ended in a draw, the little grids filling with the same stubborn stalemate, until Nell gave up keeping score and simply watched them lean closer over the board, pencils nearly touching, two heads drifting level.

When the snowplough finally rumbled up the valley at dawn, Nell found the last mat on the floor. Both of them had drawn in the final square: a small X and a small O, side by side, neither one winning. Tobias folded it into his breast pocket before the bell over the door stopped swinging. Ada pretended not to notice. Nell pretended nothing at all. She swept the floor and kept the coal count to herself.
