Minnie Mouse key on the calf
Calf · Mixed · Photo
A key with a round bow shaped like Minnie Mouse ears, topped by a red bow with white polka dots. The shaft is shaded in black and grey with lighter highlights, and the bit at the bottom is a dark castle silhouette with a white outline. The red bow is the only strong colour against the grey-black linework and shading, and the design sits centrally on the skin.

The smith's wife had been dead nine days when Tomas found the key wedged behind the bread oven. It was black iron, longer than his hand, with a bow of two round ears joined at the top and a red ribbon tied over them, sprinkled with white dots. The bit at the end was cut into a small grey castle with three towers. Nobody in Hobb's End owned a lock like it, and the blacksmith at the Cross swore he had never forged a thing so fine.

He tried it on the church door, the mill, the parson's strongbox and the chest at the foot of his own bed. It fitted none. Old Mother Greave, who sold eggs at the edge of the wood, turned it over in her palm and said the castle was no castle at all but a gatehouse, and the gate stood on the far side of the trees.
He went in the next morning with bread wrapped in a cloth and the key inside his coat. By noon the path had closed behind him, though he had not seen it close. The wall at the heart of the wood was grey and furred with moss, and it had no door, only a small hollow at the height of a child's hand. He pushed the bit in. It turned with a sound like someone clearing their throat, and a stone the size of a loaf slid inward.
Inside was a kitchen with a fire banked low and a table laid for two. On one plate sat a half-finished loaf, and beside it a note in his wife's careful hand: Bring the bread next time, I have kept the lamp lit. Tomas set his cloth down beside the others. When he turned round, the wood was open again, and the key in his pocket was warm as a hand.
