Mickey Mouse tattoo on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A cartoon Mickey Mouse is tattooed on the forearm, drawn with loose, sketchy black linework and soft wash-like shading. The ears and head are shaded in grey and black, with an orange wash on the face, while the shorts are red with yellow buttons and the shoes are yellow. The design sits centrally on a plain, pale arm against a dark background.

Brother Anselm has left the ink to dry on the lectern again, and by the time you reach the scriptorium the vellum has curled at one corner like a dog's ear. You know whose fault it is without looking. The novice has been at the margins with the wash pots, and the border of the Psalter for the feast of Saint Brendan now holds a small round-eared creature with its hands on its hips.

The abbot comes at Sext, as he always does, to see how the saint's halo is progressing. He stops. Pale grey for the ears, a smudge of orange across the face where the brush slipped, and shorts the red of the abbey's cardinal ink, buttoned with two yellow dots. "Brother, what is this?" You tell him it is a mouse, drawn in a hurry, and that the lines were meant to be firmer. He tilts his head the way the creature does. "It is cheerful," he says eventually. "The psalms are not always cheerful."

That evening you find him in the cloister with the page held to the lantern, tracing the curl of the tail with one fingertip. He says the brothers in the cold dormitory need something to laugh at during Lent. You open your mouth to argue, then think of the wash bleeding into the vellum like weather over a far field, and you pick up the brush again.

When the saint is finished, Brendan looks out of the page with a faint orange glow at the corner of his eye, as if he too has noticed the mouse. Its yellow feet stand planted on the lower margin, where they will stay for longer than any of you.
