Anchor and rope infinity on a foot

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo shows an anchor whose shank is wrapped in a rope that loops into an infinity symbol. The linework is solid and even, with simple shading in one dark ink. The design sits on the top of the foot, shown against pale skin and a light wooden floor.

Dear Nell,

The bow rope parted again at Naburn lock, and Dad swore at it the way he swears at the weather, steadily and without much malice. I knotted the new length myself. Two turns, a round turn, and the end tucked back under itself so it can't work loose. He says I tie a bowline like a Methodist says grace, too careful by half. Still, the Mary Ellen sat easy at the staithe last night and nothing drifted off.

The spare anchor lives under the cabin hatch now, its shank wrapped in the hemp we bought from the chandler in Selby. Remember the winter we tried to make the rope into a figure of eight for the signboard? Dad said it looked like a bicycle someone had sat on. But the rope curled round the shank and kept going, and when I held it up to the lamp it had no end at all, just one loop chasing its own tail back to where it started.

Mum thinks I'm daft to keep the spare on deck when the tide's running. Maybe I am. But I like knowing that whatever I'm holding onto, there's always another length of line running out behind it, back to the place we tied off from.

Come up at Easter. I'll tie you a proper knot and you can tell me what's going on with Tom.

Love, Bee
