I finally found the map in the bottom of my mother's piano stool, folded into a square no bigger than a playing card, and it still smells of the cellar at Hartley Grammar. Your handwriting is all over the margins. Nine little dotted routes, one for every staircase we were not supposed to use, and a note in the corner that says Mischief Managed, underlined twice, as if we ever managed anything but a detention.

The reunion is on Saturday in the old gym, which they have painted a colour the brochure calls sage. I am told the headmaster's study is now a store for mop buckets. I thought about walking the route alone, just to see whether the third-floor landing still creaks where your left boot used to land a half second before mine, but I stood at the bottom of the stairs in my good shoes and felt eleven years old and ridiculous.

So here is my proposal. Bring the cold tea flask you always swore was for ink. Meet me at the bike shed at ten past nine, when the caretaker goes for his pie. We will follow the footprints the way we drew them, not the way the building intends, and when the bell goes we will be the only two people in the hall who know exactly where the map ends.
