Nobody in Hollin Bank had seen the coins talk, but everybody agreed they had heard them. When the pit closed in the long strike, the company man came up the valley with a ledger under his arm and a pocketful of promises, and he went straight to Bet Garside's door, because her tab book held every family's debts in her own careful hand.

Bet tied her spotted headscarf in a double knot, the one her husband brought back from Blackpool, and sat on the step with a cigarette rolled from the last of the shag. The agent asked her to read out the sums. She did not. She tipped the tin of pennies onto the flags and let them ring, one after another, and the agent heard his own name in the clink of them, then his mother's, then the name of the boy he had sent down the shaft at fourteen because the price was right. He sat down on the wall without being asked.

The old women said coins only talked for people who had nothing left to lose. Bet said it was simpler than that. She had been listening all along, and nobody had thought to ask her. She chalked every debt in the village on the chapel wall, penny by penny, and when it was done she wiped it clean with her sleeve and gave the agent back his ledger.

He drove out before dark. Bet stood at the gate and watched the pit wheel turn over the hill for the last time, and the smoke from her cigarette went up straight in the still air, as if it had been told where to go.
