Maud Pardoe had been chasing Eli Rook for eleven weeks over a half share in the trawler Kittiwake, and on the Thursday the fleet came in short of fish she finally caught him on the fish quay with his hands in a crate of mackerel. She didn't shout. Maud had learned at her father's knee that shouting got you nothing but a wet glove. She stood at the edge of the stone, took the ledger from her oilskin, and waited for him to notice her.

"Morning, Maud," he said, not looking up. "Lovely weather for it."
"The money, Eli."
He straightened, flicked a scale off his knuckle, and gave her the smile that had talked two widows and a bank manager out of their savings. "Next week. The Dogger's been kind to us."
She opened the ledger to a page marked in red ink and read him the sum, every penny, the date he had signed, and the gull that had witnessed it. Around them the gulls screamed, a forklift reversed, and the harbourmaster pretended not to listen. Under the last line she had written in block capitals, neat and unhurried, the only sentence a man on this quay ever truly understood. She turned the book toward him.
"Read it out loud," she said.
He did. His lips moved over the words the way a man reads a warning on a bottle. Then he laughed, short and surprised, and reached for his wallet.
