Monster and speech bubble thigh tattoos

Thigh · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon tattoos sit side by side on the upper thighs of a person wearing black underwear. The left design is a yellow speech bubble with the words YOU TURNED THE PAGE in orange and red lettering, surrounded by small multicoloured stars. The right design shows a blue shaggy monster with a red nose and splashing ink, with several PLEASE speech bubbles and a small do not turn the page caption around it.

Dolores Finch found the book wedged under the cloakroom bench at the Pavilion Ballroom, between a lost glove and a tin of mints. Its cover had been chewed. On the first page, someone had written in pencil: DO NOT TURN THE PAGE. She was nineteen, the hatch girl had told her nobody read anything on a Saturday, so she turned it.

The monster came up out of the paper in a spray of blue ink, shaggy as a doormat, a red nose bobbing like a cherry. "Please," it said, flapping its hands over the margin. "PLEASE. I am only here to be looked at. If you turn the page, I shall be sent back into the dark for ever." Its voice reminded her of her uncle's wireless. Upstairs the band struck up a quickstep and the floor shook the coat hooks.

She was supposed to be minding the coats. Instead she sat on the bench and read the monster's pleas aloud, each one on its own bubble, while foxtrots drifted down the stairwell. Whenever her thumb crept towards the corner, he groaned and sprinkled stars across the lino. By the last waltz he had taken to dancing too, flinging ink in long blue ribbons, and she realised she had been holding the same page for forty minutes.

At midnight the caretaker came down to lock up and found her asleep with the book open on her knees. She woke to a small pink nose poking out from the spine and the faint rustle of paper. "Well," the monster said, sounding almost pleased, "you did turn it." She had, of course. The next page was blank apart from a yellow bubble, and inside it, in fat orange capitals, the words said YOU TURNED THE PAGE.
