Cartoon pony and zombie pony tattoos on feet

Other · Colour · Photo

Two matching tattoos sit on the tops of a pair of bare feet. The left foot shows a smiling cartoon pony with a pink swirled mane and tail, standing on a pale blue cloud. The right foot shows a grey zombie pony with stitched wounds, red blood details, a chain and a spiked ball, set in a pool of pink and red. The linework is bold and outlined, with soft shading and pastel and saturated colour throughout.

Third shift at Dover and the box came off the ferry with a sticker of a cloud on it, which is how I knew it would be trouble. Inside, wrapped in newspaper from a town I couldn't pronounce, were two plastic ponies. Glossy and pastel, the sort of thing a child trades in a playground. One was pink-maned and beaming. The other had lost most of its face and gained a length of chain and a spiked ball, and someone had painted its flanks in a red that was not paint.

The form asks you to declare toys of value. I wrote "two ponies, one unwell". Sergeant Okafor read it over my shoulder, laughed until he had to sit on the radiator, and then asked me to write it properly, which I did, though I left the word unwell in brackets.

The courier came at four with a sorry face and a folder. The sender was her niece, who painted fairground horses on a pier in Margate and had been asked by a cousin in Calais for something cheerful for a poorly little girl. The niece had sent the good pony as requested, and the bad one as a joke she hadn't meant to post. The courier wanted them both, and the form said I could release a pair of toys on payment of one pound fifty in duty, which I thought was fair for the chain.

When the courier had gone I put the smiling pony on the blue plastic cloud we keep for the sniffer dog's rewards. The zombie I stood up on the desk with the chain looped round its neck, where it could keep an eye on the paperwork. It looked terrible and it looked pleased with itself, which is more than I can say for most of what crosses this counter.
