Moomin character on stones on the back
Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small Moomin character stands on top of a heap of shaded, rounded stones, with two four-pointed stars in the sky to the left. The design is drawn in black ink with clean outlines and dotted or hatched shading on the stones. The tattoo sits centrally on the upper back against plain skin, with no other colour.

So the boats came in that night without a lantern, because Ansel the lamplighter had gone up the Gull Stacks with his wife's red shawl and not come down again. You'll want to know why he went. Hush now, the cat's under your feet, and I'm getting to it.

Up on the heap of grey stones, where the sea had thrown them years back and nobody had the nerve to shift them, there lived a creature the shape of a flour sack with a snout like a bread roll. It stood there every evening with its hands folded over its belly, counting the stars that came out over the bay. Two stars, it always said, is all you need to find your way home by, if you've the patience to look for them.
Ansel climbed to it in the dark, shawl bundled under his arm, and found the creature standing exactly where the old stories put it. It did not ask him what he wanted. It only pointed one soft finger at the sky, where two small stars were burning sharp as needles above the Stacks. Follow the left one, it said, and step only where the stones are rounded and shaded dark, for those have been sat on the longest and will not roll.
He followed them down, every step, and the stones held. His wife was waiting on the quay with the shawl she'd lent him, and she swore to me he came in wet to the knees and grinning like a boy. Mind, I've never climbed those rocks myself. I'd sooner trust a pair of stars.
