Winnie the Pooh holding a balloon on ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A small cartoon Winnie the Pooh in yellow floats upward, holding a blue balloon by its string, with three small black bees nearby. The character and balloon have bold black outlines, and the balloon has soft lighter blue cloud shading. The design sits on a plain background of skin, with the figure placed low and the balloon above it.

Nobody in Halloran House talked to the lift, so when the doors juddered open on the eleventh floor and Dean stepped out with a blue balloon bobbing above his head, I kept my mouth shut. He had bought it from the man outside the chippy for a pound, and already it was sagging. By the time he reached our landing the string had snagged on every railing between the ground floor and the top, and the balloon looked like a plum somebody had sat on.

"It's for Nan," he said, which was a lie, because Nan had been in the ground since March. The balloon was for the yellow bear in the library book Dean kept renewing, the one who was always hungry and always certain he had a plan. Dean's plan was simpler. He wanted to see whether a thing could rise the way the bees had risen off the bramble bush behind the car park that summer, three of them, cross and busy, following nothing in particular.
We climbed the last flight to the roof hatch, which the caretaker kept padlocked and which Dean had opened with a hairgrip and a great deal of swearing. The wind up there smelt of wet concrete and somebody's fried onions. Dean held the balloon out over the parapet and let the string run through his fingers. It hung there, politely, then lifted, pale sky sliding across its face like a reflection in a shop window.
I watched it climb past the eleventh floor and the tenth and the ninth, until it was only a dot above the aerials. Three specks rose after it from the bins below, circling in the warm air. Dean didn't wave. He just tucked the empty hairgrip behind his ear and said we had better get back before the lift decided to keep us.
