Moon and jackal-headed figure on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A realistic tattoo covers the lower leg, with a detailed grey and white full moon and scattered stars in a dark night sky at the top. Below, a golden-brown jackal-headed figure, resembling the Egyptian deity Anubis, is shaded with soft gradients and set against deep red and black tones. The colour is rich and the composition runs vertically from the knee to the ankle.

The flour came in sacks from the mill at Hale, and every night old Mrs Oduya counted them before she let the ovens breathe. The moon was still high over the chimneys when she began, and she talked to it as she worked, because nobody else was awake to hear her.

Her grandson had sold the bakery's copper to pay a debt, and since then the dough had refused to rise. The loaves came out flat as slates. Customers stopped at the window and went on to the place by the station. She told the moon this. The moon said nothing, which was how she knew it was listening.

On the third night a jackal came down the back lane, tall as a man, with a gold collar and eyes like struck matches. It sat on the step where the cats usually sat and watched her knead. "You are guarding something," she said. "Guard the oven, then, and I will give you the heel of the loaf." It did not take the bread. It walked to the back wall, put its long nose to the brickwork, and scratched until a loose stone shifted. Under it, wrapped in oilcloth, was the copper pan her husband had hidden the year he died.

She sold the pan back to the tinsmith for enough to buy yeast and a new sack of flour. By dawn the loaves stood tall and brown. When she looked for the jackal, the step was empty, and the moon had slipped behind the roofline, leaving only the first grey light and the smell of bread.
