Moon, cat and geometric shape on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A dotwork moon sits above a faceted, line-patterned shape and a fine-line outline of a cat resting on a hand. Stippled shading gives the moon and the soft shadow beneath the cat their texture, while crisp black lines define the hand and cat. A single teal wash sits to the right of the cat, and the rest of the design is black ink.

The moon had slipped its knot again, and Agnes found it bobbing above the fish market, dragging the string it had trailed all the way down from the hills. Nobody else looked up. The gulls were busy and the fishmonger's boy was counting crabs into a bucket. She reached for the string and it went taut against her palm, cool as wet rope, lifting her heels off the cobbles.

Her grandfather had a hand as broad as a shovel, and every evening he laid it flat on the harbour wall so the grey tom could sit on it while he tied the moon down for the night. The cat, Ossory, had long ago decided the moon belonged to him, and he watched it now with his tail curled tight around his paws, unimpressed by her struggle.
The faceted stone at the middle of the string was what kept the moon honest. Her grandfather had cut it from a lump of hillside quartz the year her mother was born, and it hummed faintly when the tide turned, so the moon knew which way to go. Agnes had never once managed to make it hum, however hard she sang at it.
She let out a little slack, and the moon drifted a foot higher with a sigh of pale light. Ossory leapt from the wall, landed on her shoulder and dug in his claws. Between them they brought it down to the stones, where its shadow pooled soft and dotted beneath the cat. She knotted the string around his collar instead, and he allowed it, purring like a kettle. Tonight, she decided, the sky could make do with one less moon.
