Colour tattoo of the Mopar logo with blue flames and black MOPAR lettering on the upper arm.

Mopar logo with blue flames on upper arm

Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised Mopar logo, a dark horseshoe-shaped emblem with a central arch, surrounded by blue flames and finished with the word MOPAR in bold black capitals below. The flames are shaded with light and dark blue tones, while the logo and lettering use solid black outlines and fills. The photograph is taken close up at an angle, with the tattoo centred on the upper arm against a plain skin background.

Dot had the badge in her palm before the lorry from the scrapyard had finished reversing up the lane. Horseshoe-shaped, black enamel gone grey at the edges, the lettering underneath worn down to a rumour. Her father had kept it in a biscuit tin with his dad's pipe and a Bakelite ring, and the tin had never once been opened in front of her.

The car sat under a tarpaulin in the back field at Hollin Farm, a dull green thing with rust blooming along the sills. Nobody in Thornley had driven it since 1979. Dot spent the winter with a wire brush and a borrowed compressor, scraping back the wings until the paint underneath came up the colour of a robin's egg. She fitted the badge to the grille on a wet Saturday in March, pressing the two prongs through the old holes and bending them flat with pliers wrapped in electrical tape.

Her uncle Ray came out with a flask and watched her turn the key. The engine coughed, thought about it, then caught with a sound like tearing canvas. Blue light crawled up from the exhaust and licked along the edges of the bonnet, flickering the way the gas ring in the kitchen did when a draught got under it. Ray dropped the flask. Dot didn't look at him. She kept one hand on the gearstick and listened to the tin rattling somewhere in her memory.

Afterwards she found a folded sheet taped inside the lid, in her father's square capitals: THE BADGE GOES WHERE THE FLAME IS. She laughed until she cried, then went out to the car in the dark and let it idle, its blue tongues dancing across the frost on the hedge.
