Mother and child outline on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a stylised outline of a woman bending over a rounded shape held in her arms, with a small open heart beneath. The linework is a single, thin, even black line with no shading or fill. The figure sits centrally along the forearm, and the heart is placed lower down, toward the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, and mind the gas lamp, it spits. I'll tell you about Nell Harker, who drew with one line and never lifted her pen. Down on Tallow Street, where the chandlers shut at nine and the gulls go quiet, she kept a sign-writing shop with a single window that faced the river.

Nobody on the Quay trusted a thing drawn without a break, but Nell's lines held. Men brought her the names for their boats and she wrote them without a lift of the brush, each letter joined to the next like rope paid out over a rail. The night her sister's baby came early in the fog, the midwife was stuck on the far side of the bridge and every lamp in the street was guttering, so Nell sat by the bed with a stub of charcoal and a scrap of paper. She drew without thinking. A bent back. A shape held close against it. The line never left the page.

When the child woke crying at four, the fog had lifted off the water and the street was grey with morning. Nell pinned the drawing above the stove. Her sister said it looked like nothing much, just a woman and a loaf of bread. Nell laughed and told her that was the whole trick of it, that a life could be drawn with one line if you were lucky enough never to need to stop.
