Mountain and camera finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are held together with fingers interlocked, showing a small tattoo of mountain peaks on one finger and a small camera on an adjacent finger. The linework is thin and solid black with minimal shading, and the ink reads as dark grey against the skin. The soft-focus mountain landscape in the background sits behind the hands and complements the subjects of the tattoos.

Dear Ida,

It is gone two and the trams have stopped, so I am writing this at the kitchen table with the radiator ticking and the city lit orange beyond the glass. I took the camera to Mr Okonjo on Water Lane this afternoon, the one with the scratched brass lens cap you always said looked like a bottle top. He turned it over twice and offered me eleven pounds. I told him no, and then I told him I would be back on Friday with money from the bakery, which is a lie I have not yet decided whether to keep.
You will remember the roll inside it. We shot it on the last morning at Glen Coe, before the cloud came down and you swore at the sky for an hour. Thirty-six frames, and I never once got the peaks in focus, because you kept tugging my sleeve and asking whether we should go down before the rain. It has sat on the dresser for a year. I have not finished it, and I am not sure I will.
Still, I keep thinking about the last frame before the rewind. I remember pressing the shutter with your fingers hooked through mine so the picture would shake, and you laughing at the blur. I suppose that is the picture I am afraid to develop, not the mountains at all.
I am posting the camera to you on Monday, roll and all. Keep it somewhere dry. If the lens cap is still missing, you know where it went.
Love, Maud
