Tent and pine trees under stars

Blackwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A tent sits at the base of a row of tall pine trees, with a scatter of small dots above them suggesting stars. The linework is bold and solid in black, with stippled shading on the tent canvas and the ground beneath. The design is centred on a plain background of skin, with the arm resting on a black leather surface.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The old woman at the edge of the pine wood kept one tent for the travelling folk who came through in autumn, and she never asked them their names. Her garden ran down to the trees in neat rows of beans and leeks, and past the last row the ground rose into the dark stand of firs that the village children were told not to climb.

One year a boy arrived with a canvas roll on his back and a cough that rattled like a loose gate. He pitched the tent himself, badly, with two of the pegs missing, and the old woman watched him from the kitchen window. In the morning she carried out a bowl of broth and a pair of pegs carved from ash, and she set them on the grass without a word.

He stayed until the first frost. Each night she saw his lantern through the trunks, and each night, when the stars came out over the ridge, she counted them from her step the way her mother had taught her, pressing a finger to the cold stone for every one she could name. The boy learned the count from her. By the time the leaves were gone he could name more than she could.

When the cart came to take him down the valley, the tent was already folded and tied. He had left one thing behind, pressed flat under a stone at the edge of the garden: a row of small black dots scratched into the earth, scattered above a line of pointed trees. The old woman left it there. Come spring, the beans grew up around it.
