A black and grey tattoo of mountain peaks sits inside a bold circular outline, with dark ground and dotted shading in the lower ridges. The boats went out from Skerrow only on the dark nights, because the herring rose to the lamps when there was no moon to hide them. Old Tam Greave rowed his father's coble past the harbour wall with a tin lantern hooked on the bow, and his grandson Ewan sat in the stern, green with the swell, counting the lights of the other boats until they went out one by one into the fog.

The fishermen said that past the skerries there was a ring of sea no keel had ever crossed, and inside it stood mountains that kept the last of the sun long after the water had turned to slate. Tam had never believed it. He told the boy the stars were nail-holes in a tarpaulin and the peaks were only cloud that had forgotten to drift on.

That night the lantern guttered out in a squall and the fog closed over the bow like a lid. Ewan was the one who saw them, three hard points of light off to the left where no star had any business being, and they stayed put while the rest of the sky spun. He steered by them, shouting over the wind, and Tam held the tiller and did not argue.

They came through the skerries at first grey light with the nets heavy and the water flat. Tam looked back once at the fog lifting off the ring of hills behind them, grey peaks catching a thin gold edge, and said nothing about it. Ewan hung the dead lantern on its hook and whistled the whole way in.
