Mountain and pine landscape in a circle on the chest
Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A mountain range with stippled shading and a row of pine trees sits inside a thin circle. A long horizontal line runs out from the treeline to the right, and a vertical line drops from it through the bottom of the circle. The work is in black ink and greys on the upper chest, with the shoulder visible at the edge of the frame.

The theodolite has frozen again, and you are the only one on the col who knows how to coax it back. Cold brass, a bubble that will not settle, the wind pushing at your collar while Harriet shouts the reading up from the scree. You take the sighting ring between finger and thumb the way your father taught you, circle first, then the thin cross of the wire, and wait for the ridge to stop trembling.

Down in the valley the pines stand in a single dark row, as though someone had drawn them with a fine nib and then lost patience. Beyond them the range rises in grey stipple, peak after peak, each one a little paler than the last. The horizon runs out flat from the treeline like a ruled line in a ledger, and the plumb weight drops from the instrument's stem through everything you have ever measured.
Harriet wants the figure for the parish boundary by dusk. The men in the inn at Carn Dhu have already agreed the stone should sit on the eastern slope, where the old drovers' road bends. You know the mountain has never cared for their agreements. You write the bearing in the notebook anyway, pencil blunt from the cold, and underline it twice.
When the bubble finally settles you look up and the sky has thinned to the colour of a dove's back. The last peak catches a sliver of light, and for one moment the whole surveyed world looks perfectly level. You close the notebook, tuck the brass into its felt case, and let the wind have the rest.
