Black and grey fine line tattoo of mountains, pine trees and a lake inside a circle, on the inner forearm.

Mountain lake and pine trees in a circle on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular frame holds a landscape of snow-dusted peaks, a dark row of pine trees and a lake with horizontal ripple lines. The linework is fine and mostly single-weight, with stippled dotwork shading on the mountain slopes and the trees. The design is in black and grey ink, with the circle outline and a few angular lines above it on pale skin.

Margaret had brought the old survey map because nobody else would remember the lake was called Tarn Hollow on the council sheets and Mere Water on the signs. The reunion was in the function room above the Crown, which had changed its carpet twice since they were sixteen, but the window still faced the water. Rain had come off the fells all afternoon, and the lake lay flat between the pines like a sheet of pewter.

Hal Brennan found her by the window before anyone else did. He had been the one who could draw, the boy who copied the county contours onto the backs of his exercise books and invented peaks to fill the gaps. "You still have it?" he asked, nodding at the rolled paper under her arm. She unrolled it on a table sticky with spilled lager. Their names were pencilled in the margin from the summer they had camped on the north shore and sworn to draw the lake exactly as it looked from the water, ripples included.

They argued for a while about the light that morning. Hal said the peaks should be dusted white by then, because the first frost came early up there. Margaret said he was remembering a different year. Someone's husband laughed at them from the bar. In the end they agreed the picture had never been right, because neither of them had ever stayed long enough to watch the reflection settle.

When she left, the rain had stopped. Water lay in a thin skin across the car park, and in it the pines stood upside down and perfectly still, until a gust came over the tarmac and broke them into rings.
