Mountain and pine tree landscape on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph from behind shows a black tattoo of mountain peaks with several tall pine trees on the right, sitting on a horizontal base of wavy lines. The linework is thin and sketchy, with light shading on the mountain faces and tree shapes. The tattoo is centred on the neck below short dark hair, against a plain cream background and a green collar.

Dear Tom,

The mist has sat on the water for three days now, so the mountain across the sound has gone, and only its top is left, floating over the grey like something the tide forgot. Mrs Gilchrist says the old people called it the Anvil, though I have never heard it ring. Each morning I walk down to the pier to see whether the ferry is standing off the point, and each morning it isn't.
The pines on the near slope are the ones you and I counted the winter Dad built the new shed. Thirty-one, then thirty-two when the storm took the one by the gate and we found a seedling under its roots. I tell myself I can still count them from the kitchen window, though most days I only get the three nearest, bent the same way the wind bends everything here.
Last Thursday the mist lifted for almost an hour. The mountain stood up whole, snow still on its shoulders, and the water below it lay flat as slate, with those thin lines of swell running along the foot of the hill just as you drew them on the back of the fish invoice. I laughed out loud on the pier like a madwoman. The gulls didn't mind.
Come home at Easter if the boats are running. Bring the good pencils. I will count the trees with you, and we will see whether the number has changed. Love, Ellie
