Mountain landscape and deer tattoos on forearms
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The left image shows a circular mountain landscape with a moon, a starry sky, snow-capped peaks and pine trees along the base, built up from fine stippled dots and shading. The right image shows a small deer with spotted markings standing side on, drawn with fine lines and soft shading on the forearm. Both tattoos are in black ink and grey tones, with plain, uncluttered backgrounds.

The snow had sealed the pass for the third day running, and Ruth Calloway had stopped counting the guests at the Hollin Inn when the fawn turned up at the woodshed door. It was barely a week old by the look of its legs, spotted pale across the back as if someone had flicked a brush over it, and it stood in the lamplight as though it had been expecting her.

Tomas from the kitchen said the hunters had been up the far side on Tuesday, and that a doe was seldom far from a fawn. Ruth didn't like the sound of that. She warmed milk in a saucepan, cooled it on the sill, and fed it from a cloth tied at one corner, the way her mother had taught her with the lambs. By midnight it had eaten its fill and folded itself down beside the stove, the guests had gone up to their rooms, and the house settled into its usual creaks against the wind.
When she went out to bank the coals, the sky had cleared. The moon sat above the ridge, hard and white, and the peaks beyond the valley held it like a coin on a wet sleeve. Below them the pines stood in a dark band, and a line of small prints ran across the yard to the wall and stopped. The fawn was already back at the edge of the light, watching her with its ears turned.
She left the woodshed door open a hand's width and went to bed without deciding anything.
In the morning the plough came up the valley road, and the guests began to argue about breakfast. Ruth went out with her coat undone. The tracks led up past the last wall, through the snow towards the trees, and at the very top of the slope, where the pines began, the fawn stood against the white with its head turned back towards the inn. It looked at her for one long moment, then stepped into the dark of the trees and was gone.
