Nobody on Harrowgate Lane believed Mr Pettigrew's dog could stretch until the bakery van reversed over the bin and Biscuit flattened himself into a long amber ribbon, hooked the lid with one paw and dragged it back before the lorry could crush anything. Ottoline, who was nine and said the thing everyone else was thinking, decided this was the most important event in the history of the lane.

She took the news to the park, where a stag stood every morning by the duck pond, his antlers like a coat stand that had seen better winters. The grey doe beside him nibbled the hedge and eyed Ottoline's jam sandwich with interest. "He can't stretch for ever," the stag said, in the slow voice of someone who had outlived the bandstand. "Every pull costs him a bit of his shape. Push him too far and he forgets which end is the dog."

Ottoline didn't believe him, so she dared Biscuit to fetch the ball that had rolled into the middle of the pond. He stretched across the water until he was thin as a bootlace, closed his jaws on the ball and then found himself caught between the far bank and home. He chose home, though it took until dusk and the ball was still in the pond. He came back with his ears a finger's width longer than before.

That night Ottoline went back to the pond with a torch and found two sets of hoofprints in the mud and, beside them, one long paw print stretched as fine as pencil. In the morning, when she told the stag, he only lowered his head and went back to watching the water, as if he had seen this bargain struck many times before.
