Tent and moon circle tattoos on forearms

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two arms are shown side by side, each with a circular tattoo: one depicts a mountain and moon above pine trees, the other a tent between trees under a crescent moon and stars. A close-up panel shows the larger tent design in fine stippled dotwork shading, with the sky and ground textured in dots rather than solid lines. The tattoos are rendered entirely in black and grey ink and are centred within their circular frames.

The pole snapped on the third attempt, and Mags said a word her mother would not have approved of. Behind her the narrowboat Kestrel Rose sat low against the towpath, its brass chimney cold and its engine ticking as it cooled. Dan knelt in the wet grass and held the flysheet down with both knees, pretending he was not laughing.

They had come up the Kennet and Avon in October with no plan beyond the next lock. Ferry Lane had a gate that stuck, and a pub three miles off that did proper chips. Mags liked the towpath best after dark, when the barges' lamps went out one by one and the river kept running under the stars regardless. Dan said it was the only thing on the water that never needed steering.

By the time the tent stood, the moon had risen over the poplars, thin as a fingernail paring. They crawled inside without eating and lay listening to a tawny owl somewhere across the water. Mags watched the pale ring of light through the mesh and thought about how small a tent looked from the outside, and how big the sky stayed no matter where you pitched.

In the morning the frost had furred the flysheet white. Dan unzipped the door and found the river had crept up overnight, lapping at the last peg. They packed in a hurry, laughing about the pole, and when Kestrel Rose finally pulled away from the bank Mags looked back once. The tent was a small dark shape on the grass, and the owl had already moved on to the next bank.
