Night forest scene on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A diamond-shaped tattoo on the inner forearm shows a night forest with pine trees, distant mountains, a starry sky, a tent and a seated animal, set on a rocky base that tapers to a point. The scene is built from dense stippled dotwork for the sky and hills, with finer solid-black linework for the trees and foreground. The left photo shows the whole forearm, and the right close-up shows the detail of the stippling and the rock edges in black and grey.

The stone shelf ended a stride past the tent, and beyond it there was only the drop and the sound of a beck somewhere far below, like a kettle left on in another house. Ivo had wanted to pitch nearer the pines. Marnie said the pines had stood there longer than either of them and could keep the wind off without help, and the stars were better from the edge. She was right about the stars. They came out thick over the ridge while the hills behind the wood went from grey to black, the way they do when someone is turning a lamp down by degrees.

The fox came after the second tin of beans. It sat down on the log they had dragged to the fire ring, neat as a verger, and looked at the tent with the patience of something that had waited for the humans to finish being loud. Ivo offered it the heel of the loaf. It did not take the bread. It turned its head toward the far side of the valley, where a light was moving slowly between the trunks, and then it stood up and stepped off the ledge as though the rock were a pavement.
They found the light in the morning. It was a torch left burning in the bothy at Carn Dubh, hung in the crook of a rowan so walkers could find the path in fog. Nobody had been up there in weeks. Marnie walked down to check and came back with muddy knees and a story about a fox asleep on the bothy step, curled over its own tail, breathing as if it had kept watch all night.
Ivo asked her why the fox had gone down there at all. Marnie shrugged and packed the stove. Some lights are only there so something can find its way back, she said, and a fox is as good a keeper as any.
