Black and grey circular tattoo of mountains under a night sky with a moon, pine trees and a winding path, on the inner forearm.

Mountain night scene in a circle on a forearm

Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular tattoo shows snow-capped mountains beneath a starry night sky with a full moon, wisps of cloud and a dark sky filled with dot-shaded stars. Below, a dotted hillside contains rows of pine trees and a winding path that leads toward the bottom of the circle. The piece uses bold outlines with stippled dotwork shading and solid black areas, all in black ink and greys.

"Pull in behind the orange lamp," Teodor said through the window. "The barrier stays down until the moon clears the ridge, and the moon is in no hurry." You had been parked since dusk with the engine off, the heater ticking as it cooled, the cab smelling of wet wool and a flask of coffee you had stopped refilling hours ago.

He took your papers into the hut and you watched his shadow move behind the frosted glass, bending over each page the way some men read weather. Outside, the road climbed in tight switchbacks through the pines. The trees ran up the slope until they gave out beneath the bare grey shoulders of the mountain, and snow sat on the peaks like something somebody had forgotten to collect. A pale wisp of cloud drifted across the stars, caught on a crag, then slid free.

When Teodor came back he carried two cups of something that steamed. "My grandmother walked this before there was a road," he said, handing you one. "A goat track, straight up through the trees. She carried eggs over in a basket and came back with salt." He nodded at the dark line of path curling below the ridge. "You could walk it tonight, if you wanted to be stupid. The moon would show you the way."

You laughed, and then you didn't. The papers came back folded inside a plastic sleeve, and the barrier rose with a sound like a long breath let out. You drove on through the switchbacks with the window down. At the summit lay a car park, a sign in two languages, and beyond it the far valley full of small yellow lights. You looked back once. The moon had cleared the ridge, and the road behind you was a thin silver thread wandering down through the dark pines, needles caught in its bends.
