Mountain range with birds on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo of a jagged mountain range runs across the side of the foot, with four small birds in flight below the peaks. The peaks are drawn with fine outlines and solid dark shading on one side of each ridge, giving them depth. The tattoo is shown in close, side-on framing against a grey floor, with the edge of a green suede sandal visible on the left.

The pinkfeet came over the Ben on Tuesday, late, as they always do once the frost sets in. I was out at the gate with the dog when I heard them before I saw them, that wild chatter like a row of women at a bus stop. Four strays broke off from the main skein and dropped low over the bothy wall. You used to say those four were the ones who'd never settled, and you'd tell me to stop feeding them crusts.
I have been in the city nine months now. The flat in Partick has a window that looks onto a brick wall and a bin store, and I have stopped pretending it is a view. Mrs Okafor downstairs asked me on Sunday whether I was homesick, and I said no, which was a lie she could see straight through.
Then the letter from the estate came. Calum has been offered the lease on the upper glen cottage, and he's asked whether I want to come back up and help with the tups in November. I haven't answered him yet. I wanted to tell you first, because you'd know whether it was a sensible thing or only a sentimental one.
I've enclosed a photograph of the hill from the road, taken through the windscreen with the wipers still going. Tell me if you can see the notch where the old drove road cuts across. If you can, I'll be on the first bus north on Friday.
Love, Morag
