Mountain peaks with coordinates on upper back
Geometric · Back · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows three overlapping triangular mountain peaks, with a teal peak on the left, a dark grey peak in the centre and a faded grey peak behind them. Below the peaks, two lines of black sans-serif text give latitude and longitude figures. The peaks are filled with soft gradient shading and solid colour, while the text is crisp, and the photo is taken straight on at the upper back.

The theodolite was still warm from the sun when Tamsin Abney put her eye to it and found the third peak. Two were on the county sheet already, drawn in brown ink by a man who had been dead since the Crimean business. The third stood behind them like someone waiting to be introduced, grey as wet slate, and when she wrote its bearing in the field book her pencil would not keep still.

Owen Pryce, carrying the chain, said it was haze off the valley floor and nothing more. He had said the same about the stream that ran uphill below Crooked Gap, and the stream had turned out to be a seam of coal. They walked the baseline twice. The figures came out the same both times: north thirty-five degrees, forty-two minutes and ninety-one hundredths; west eighty-three degrees, forty minutes and two hundred and ninety-seven thousandths. Owen read them back and then refused to repeat them, as if saying them aloud would make them true.
The county office sent her letter back with a clerk's note in the margin. The coordinates fell in Pell's Lake, which had been flooded for a reservoir in 1891 and had no peaks in it at all. Tamsin took the train up the next Thursday regardless. She stood on the shore with the sheet folded in her coat and the water flat and silver below her, and above it, plain as a hand held up to stop traffic, the third peak sat in the cloud where it had always been.
She unfolded the map on the gunwale of a rowing boat she had hired for a shilling and inked the grey summit in beside the other two, very small, in the corner where no one would think to check.
