Mountain, pines and waves in a square frame
Traditional · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A square-framed scene shows a mountain peak rising above a row of dark pine tree silhouettes, with stylised curling waves filling the lower section. The mountain uses soft grey and pale pinkish-brown wash shading, while the trees and waves use solid black fill and fine stippled or hatched shading. The composition is centred and symmetrical, with a bold black outline enclosing the whole design on the upper arm.

Brother Anselm kept the lamp on the north shoulder of the mountain, where the pines grew up to the wall and the sea lay below like a sheet of pewter. Every evening he climbed the stair, trimmed the wick, and set the glass in its iron cage so that fishing boats coming home through the rocks could see the gap between the teeth of the shore. The abbot said the lamp was a small thing. Anselm said the sea did not think so.

One autumn a boat did not come home. The wind had gone round to the west and the waves stood up in long curling ranks, each one with its white lip turned over like a scholar's page. Anselm lit the lamp, then lit a second, then carried the bell down to the landing and rang it until his hands bled on the rope. Nothing came out of the dark but more water.
Near midnight a grey shape rose on the far swell. It was not a boat but the old mountain itself, its pale shoulder catching the light. The monk understood then that the mountain had been watching the water all along and had been waiting to be asked. He knelt on the wet stones and asked it, plainly, to hold the wind for one hour.
The wind turned back to the east before dawn. In the morning three men and a boy came up the path carrying their nets, and the boy asked who had put out the lamp that night. Anselm said nobody had, and went back up the stair to trim the wick.
