Mountain range in a botanical circle on the chest

Dotwork · Chest · Mixed · Photo

A small circular tattoo shows a range of jagged mountain peaks in grey stippled dotwork, with a small moon or sun dot above them on the left. A thin wreath of green leaves and pink flowers curves around the lower half of the circle. The tattoo sits centrally on the chest between the open edges of a teal cardigan, with the ink crisp and the skin around it lightly flushed.

You asked in your last letter whether the peaks really look like broken teeth from the valley floor. From up here they look like a sentence nobody finished.

Queen Ilse has sent a man up with a brass astrolabe and orders to chart every summit before the thaw. He is called Brannoch, and he sleeps with the instrument under his blanket like a child with a lamp. Last night he showed me the moon through it, a pale coin hung just above the Sister peak, and he told me that in the old tongue the moon is the mountains' only witness. I laughed, and he did not.

This morning I walked the ridge to the ring of cairns the shepherds built long before my grandfather was born. Someone has woven briar and ivy around the stones and pushed in pink wild roses, though nothing flowers at this height. I counted nine blossoms before the wind took my hat. I think they are a way of saying the mountains were here first and we only arrived to name them.

I am going to draw the view as Brannoch wants, but I will leave a gap in the circle at the lower left, where the roses are, so the page can breathe. Tell Mother the salt will come when the pass opens. Tell her my hand is steadier than it was in the spring. Your brother, Teodor.
