Mountain range line tattoo on a calf

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A single unbroken black line forms a range of jagged mountain peaks across the outer lower leg, with a few small peaks shaded in light grey. The linework is thin and even, and the design sits in a horizontal band across the middle of the frame. Grey leggings, a snowy mountain slope and a bright blue sky fill the background.

The rain had been coming off the moor since six, and by eight the stalls on the square were slumped under their tarpaulins like wet dogs. I was packing away the last of the old maps when Ruth's grandson came down the steps with a carrier bag of coins and a question he had clearly rehearsed on the bus.

He wanted a mountain. Not a map of one, he said, a mountain. I told him the Ordnance Survey had every hill in the country printed in brown contours, and he shook his head so hard the rain flew off his hood. He had seen one from the top deck in January, a line of white teeth against a sky so blue it hurt, and nobody on the bus had believed him that it was real.

So I took a sheet of brown paper from under the counter and a soft pencil, and I drew the skyline the way my father taught me to draw coastlines: one unbroken stroke, never lifting the lead, letting the peaks arrive where the hand wanted them. Three big summits, then a long shoulder, then two small ones I shaded lighter because they sat further off. He watched the pencil the way you'd watch a fuse.

When I finished he didn't say thank you. He rolled the paper once, tight, tucked it inside his jacket against the wet, and walked off across the car park with his eyes on the sky, as though the hills were already standing over the roofs. I shut the lid on the rest of the maps. The line was still there on the paper in his pocket, and I left it at that.
