Pickup truck outline on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot and ankle with rolled up denim jeans, showing a small pickup truck outline tattooed on the outer ankle. The truck is drawn in thin, single black linework with no shading, and it sits in the middle of the frame. A blurred red vehicle and greenery in the background are out of focus.

You'll none of you have forgotten Walt Pennick's red pickup, though most of you were too busy being clever to ride in it. It had a cracked windscreen held together with parcel tape and a horn that only worked when it rained. Every Friday in the summer of 1979 it came grinding up the lane to Hollins Farm to carry the eggs down to the market at Carrow, and every Friday it took one more child along, because nobody in this parish could say no to Walt.

That was the summer the Ashdown girl drew it. Maddy Ashdown sat under the oak with a biro and the back of a seed catalogue, sketching that truck in one unbroken line and never lifting the pen. She said if she never took the pen off the paper, the truck could not leave without her. Walt saw it and laughed till he coughed, then tore the page out, folded it into his cap, and said he'd drive it in his pocket to every town between here and the coast.

He never did reach the coast. The truck went off the Carrow bridge in the October rain, and the eggs went with it, and Walt climbed out of the water with a split lip and his cap still on his head. When the men cleared the cab they found the seed catalogue on the dashboard, dry as a biscuit, that single black line of the truck running across it without a break.

So when you go home tonight and see some lad with a ute inked on his ankle, don't laugh at him. Ask where it's headed. In my experience they'll tell you they never once took the pen off the page.
