Mountain ridge and pine trees on a foot

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line tattoo of a mountain range outline runs across the side of a bare foot, with thin black linework tracing the peaks. A row of small pine tree silhouettes sits along a diagonal line beside the ridge. The black ink stands out against pale skin and white bedding, in a simple, softly lit photo.

At ten past three the ward goes quiet in the way Mrs Okonedo calls the hour the building breathes, and you sit at the end of the corridor with the drug trolley key on its lanyard and a biro that has stopped working twice. Someone has left a paper napkin from the canteen folded on the desk. You unfold it and there is the ridge you drew last week on your break, the line rising and falling like a sentence you keep meaning to finish.

Your brother sent the photo from Glen Affric: the pines on the lower slope dark as dropped stitches, the summit lost in cloud. He said come up in May, I'll carry the flask. You said you'd see. Night shift makes everything sound like a promise made by someone else. Bed six buzzes, a man wants his water changed, and you walk the corridor counting doors the way you count pines.

By the time the sky greys over the car park you have drawn the whole range again, peak by peak, and added the trees along the slope beside it, twelve of them, each a little taller than the last because you forgot to stop. Handover is at seven. The day staff will find a napkin on the desk with a mountain on it and think nothing of it.

You fold it into your pocket, where it goes soft at the creases. In May you will stand at the bothy door with your boots unlaced and the flask warm in your hands, and you will look at the real ridge and try to draw it from memory, and fail, and be glad of the failing.
