Mountains and crescent moon on an ankle
Dotwork · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small tattoo of a range of mountain peaks sits beneath a dotted circle containing a crescent moon. The peaks are outlined and hatched with fine black lines, while the circle is filled with stippled dots. The ink is black on pale skin, and the tattoo is photographed straight on against a grey stone step and pavement.

Tomas had the stove lit before I got my boots off, which was the first thing he had done right all week. Outside, the pass ran up in five grey teeth against a sky going the colour of wet slate. We were three days late off the ridge, and the route sheet in my lap had three different pencil lines for the same trail, because I had been wrong twice and corrected myself twice.

"Tell me what you see," he said, and I told him the peaks, counting them the way my grandmother counted rosary beads. Then the moon came up behind the Sallow shoulder, thin as a paring knife, and the sky around it filled with cold specks of light until it looked less like sky than a sieve of frost. I had no paper big enough. I took the back of the survey sheet and drew what I could: the teeth, a ring, and then stippled the ring with the tip of my pencil, one dot at a time, because that was the only way I knew to make the sky hold still.
Tomas watched me do it for a long while. "You'll be at that all night," he said. "A dot for every star you missed." I told him the stars weren't missed, only waiting their turn. He laughed, the first time since the col, and went out to check on the mule.
In the morning the pencil ring had smudged to a grey eye on the paper. I folded the sheet into my notebook, behind the route to Sallow. When I unfolded it again at the hut door, the moon had kept its place, and so had the peaks, and so, I suppose, had we.
