Grey mouse holding daisies

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A grey mouse with a pink-tinted nose and whiskers sits upright, clutching green foliage, with three white daisies with yellow centres rising above it. The mouse is rendered with dark outlines and soft grey shading, while the leaves and flower centres carry the colour. The composition is tightly framed on the skin, with part of a dark teal tattoo visible at the left edge.

Dear Marjorie,

You will not believe what happened at the Hollis wedding on Saturday. The vicar had just said the word "forsaking" when the church mouse came out from under the font with a daisy in its teeth. Not a whole bouquet, mind, only the one flower, and it marched straight up the aisle as if it had been invited. Nobody screamed. Ruth's little nephew clapped, and the mouse stopped dead by the end of the front pew, sat up on its hind legs and took a good long look at all of us.

Then it did something I have not stopped thinking about. It pulled a second daisy from the arrangement by the altar, tucked the stalk under one arm and a sprig of fern under the other, and sat there cleaning its whiskers while the register was signed. Frank said it was the most dignified thing he had ever seen at a wedding, and Frank once got married in a borrowed suit with the dog for best man.

Afterwards, by the lychgate, Ruth found me and asked whether I had brought the mouse. I said I had not, though I suspect she half believed me. She said it was the first thing in fifty years that had come to the church looking for something it wanted and taking only what it needed. I told her that was a bit grand for a rodent. She laughed and said she had decided it was a blessing.

I have pressed the daisy from the aisle inside my missal. It has gone brown at the edges, but the little yellow middle is still bright. Come for tea on Sunday and I will show you. Bring your appetite, and maybe a biscuit tin with a sturdy lid.

Love, Pat
