Moustache tattoo on upper arm

Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A photograph of a small moustache tattoo on the upper arm, positioned just below the hem of a pale short sleeve. The moustache has curled ends and is shaded with dark hatched lines that give it depth. The ink is black and grey against the skin, set against a softly blurred brick wall in muted tones.

Don't you go looking at that moustache painted on the Co-op wall as if it fell out of the sky. Wilf Dunmore cut hair on Mill Street for thirty-one years, and every morning at seven he waxed the ends of his own moustache with a bit of candle grease and curled them up with a hairpin, until they looked like the tails of two startled cats. The whole of Hadley Cross knew it. Nobody knew he'd been itching for something new to be proud of.

Then the fair came to the water meadows the summer the bridge was rebuilt. There was a tent with a painted sign, THE NEEDLE OF ST. JUDE, and a thin man in a green cravat who would draw anything on a forearm for sixpence. Edie told Wilf not to be a fool. Wilf told Edie he was only going to look. He came home that evening with a little black moustache on the soft of his arm, hatched all over with fine lines like a comb drawn through wet hair, and he held it out to his wife as if it were a letter from the King.

Edie didn't speak to him until Michaelmas. But the odd thing, the thing I was told by the man who swept the tent away, is that the green cravat was gone by morning and nobody ever found the needle. Wilf kept his waxed ends all his life. Whenever a customer asked him what the mark on his arm meant, he'd roll his sleeve up, look at it fondly, and say, "Well, it means I was brave once, and I've never been able to prove otherwise."
