Close-up of two fingers with dark serif lettering reading Mr. and Mrs., with a band on one finger and a diamond ring on the other, in a Lettering style tattoo on the hand.

Mr and Mrs lettering across two fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two fingers are shown side by side in close-up, one reading Mr. and the other Mrs. in dark, bold serif capitals. The linework is solid and even, with the ink appearing as a dark blue-black against the skin, and the letters are placed centrally along each finger. The warm, close framing shows both rings and the lettered fingers, with the background cropped to the hands.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gatehouse at Harrowcleve had two oak doors and not a single name on either, and the new owners wanted both labelled before the wedding party came up the hill road. I was the only sign-writer left in the valley who still cut his capitals by hand, so I got the ladder, a tin of lamp-black paint and the job of bringing a ruin back to the business of being read.

The first door I did before noon. Mr. went on in heavy serifs, the stops set square like the slates on the roof above me. The woman who commissioned it stood in the rubble of the old chapel with her arms folded, deciding something she had not yet told me. She said her late father had been a stonemason who never once misspelled a headstone, and she wanted his care on the wood.

The second door took the afternoon. Mrs. had to sit centrally, exactly where the grain ran smoothest, so I measured twice and mixed the paint thinner than I liked, a blue-black from soot and linseed that dried to the colour of a deep bruise in the lamplight. When the party arrived at dusk, the couple walked past the brass plates without a glance and pressed their palms flat against the wood, one over the other, so the two words touched at the edge. I packed my brushes and left them to it. Some people want their names on a door, I thought, and some want them where the weather cannot reach, and the paint on both was dry before anyone thought to ask which was which.
