Wonder Woman and Superman emblems on fingers
Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands with fingers interlaced show small superhero emblems tattooed on the fingers. On the left, a Wonder Woman emblem is drawn in black outline with red and yellow fill, and on the right a red Superman shield with a yellow S sits on another finger. The close-up framing and soft focus keep the focus on the two small, simply outlined designs.

The hall smelled of floor polish and lukewarm gravy, and by nine o'clock the reunion had gone quiet in the way of people who have run out of things to say about their children. Nell Garside found Tamsin Roe beside the coat rack, turning an empty paper cup between her fingers. "You still owe me a bus ticket," Tamsin said. "Forty years is a long time to carry a debt."

So Nell told her the old tale, the one their Nana had told them on the back step in Hollin Row. There were two girls, she said, who swore on a jam jar of river water that they would be each other's shield. When the big lads from the mill came down the lane, the first girl stood in front with her chin up, and the second stood behind her with her arms folded and her eyes on the gate. Neither one ever let the other take the blow alone. Nana always said the lesson was obvious, and then she would refuse to say what it was.
Tamsin laughed, a short surprised sound, and held up her hand. On one finger sat a small red shield with a yellow letter in its middle, inked the spring after their mothers stopped speaking. Nell lifted her own hand in reply. Her emblem was a black-edged bolt, the colour of the lightning in a comic from a shop in Lincoln that had since shut. They had chosen the pair together in a back room that smelled of antiseptic and cigarettes, and they had never once told anyone why.
Out in the car park, Tamsin slid her hand into Nell's coat pocket, and for once neither of them pretended to be the one standing in front.
