Small script love tattoo on a finger
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand is shown with the word love written in thin, dark script on the side of one finger. The linework is fine and even, with a slightly soft, handwritten quality. The ink is black on a light skin tone, and the background is a dark blur of warm city lights.

Dear Tom, the ewes started lambing on Tuesday and Dad has not slept properly since. He sits in the straw with a flask and a torch, talking to them as if they were the parish council. The lanes are white to the gate now, and the milk lorry comes only when the road gritters decide it should. Last night I walked up to the top field after feeding, which you would call foolish in this cold. From up there you can see the town spread across the bottom of the valley, all orange smears and little moving headlights. You said once that every one of those windows was a person doing something they had not told their mothers. I stood there a long time with my hands in my pockets and snow going down my collar.
I found your old fountain pen in the dresser drawer this morning, the one with the chewed cap. The ink had dried in it, but I ran warm water into the nib and it wrote again, thin and a bit shaky, the way yours always did. I have been practising your loop on the backs of the feed invoices. It is daft at my age, but the letters came out just as you made them, and I did not want to waste them. Come home at Easter, or at least write me something I can read aloud to Dad.
Love, Jess
P.S. The bent-eared ewe had twins after all. Dad says they are the only sensible thing to come out of this winter.
