Mulder quote banner with UFO and badge

Traditional · Other · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a flying saucer above a badge that reads Department and Agency, with a hand holding a cigarette trailing smoke beside a mobile phone. Small pink flowers and green leaves sit around the phone, and a scrolled banner along the bottom carries the words Mulder it's me. Bold black outlines frame flat areas of yellow, orange, red and green, with the smoke and sky left in soft tones.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The phone had been dead for two centuries when it rang on the night shift, and I was the only one on the loading dock who still smoked, so I was the one who heard it through the open doors. It was a flat grey handset with a cracked antenna nub, sitting in a glass case under the label Personal Effects, Unidentified. Somebody had stuck a sticker of pink flowers on the back. The ringing came again, thin and wrong, like a bird trying to remember a song.

I carried it to the desk with my cigarette still smouldering between two fingers. When I pressed the green key a man's voice came through the static, tired and close, as if he were sitting at the far end of a long corridor. He said, 'Mulder, it's me. Are you still out there?' Then he laughed at himself, and the line hissed, and he said, 'Tell Scully the saucer's on the roof again.'

Nobody in the archive knew a Mulder. The badge in the case said Department of Investigation and nothing more, the lettering worn to a ghost. I pulled the registry for the old agency and found a box of case files stamped with a flying saucer. Tucked inside the last folder was a photograph of a man with a cigarette, grinning at a camera on a hillside, holding a phone the same grey as the one on my desk.

I dialled the number written on the folder's flap. It rang once, and the same tired voice answered, as if he had been waiting in that corridor all along. 'Thanks for picking up,' he said. 'I need you to come and find us.' I looked up through the skylight, where a pale disc hung over the city, perfectly still, and I lit a fresh cigarette and went to get my coat.
