Watercolour cat head on ribs
Ribs · Colour · Photo
A cat's head faces forward, drawn with loose black outline strokes on the upper sides of the face and ears. Teal eyes sit within splashes of purple, green, red, orange and blue that bleed beyond the edges of the linework. The tattoo is shown on the side of a torso, with a black bra strap and the waistband of light denim visible around it against a dark background.

The dye-works at Hollin Ferry had been shut since the spring flood, but old Mother Peck still came down the lane each morning with a saucer of milk. The cat who waited on the sill was grey as wet slate, and nobody in the village could say where he had been born. Vats stood along the back wall, crusted with every colour the river had ever carried, and Tibbs walked the rims of them as though he owned the lot.

On the last morning before the Duke's inspectors arrived, Mother Peck found him asleep in the madder vat, his paws stained red to the wrist. She scolded him and carried him out to the yard, where rain had pooled in a row of barrels. He stepped into the nearest one and came out blue. Into the next, green. By the time the lane filled with carts, he had walked through violet and ochre and a shade of orange nobody had a name for, leaving a trail of wet prints across the cobbles.
The inspectors found a cat they could not account for and a Duke who would not hear of a cat in his cloth. Mother Peck told them only that the animal went where he pleased and came home when he chose. They bundled him into a sack and carried him to the edge of the Duke's land. Tibbs was on the sill again before the cart had turned, and when the afternoon sun came through the glass his eyes were no longer amber but the teal of the millrace under the weir, deep and clear enough to see the bottom.
