Multicoloured rose on a shoulder
Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
A large rose sits on the shoulder and upper chest, with its petals shaded in teal, pink, purple and orange. Bold black outlines define the petals, and the leaves are filled with black and fine white hatching. The lower edge of the frame shows a grey tattoo with a circular geometric design and a partly visible scroll motif.

The dye had gone wrong again, and Vera stood over the copper with her sleeves rolled, watching the rose-pink bloom spread into the teal she'd meant for the bodice lining. Mr Okafor from the Palais wanted the dress for Saturday, and she had nothing but a bolt of silk and a grudge.

She tipped the vat, fished out the offcut and held it up to the bulb. The colour had gone the way the sky goes over the pier at closing time: pink bleeding into violet, a bruise of orange at the hem where the water had run too hot. It was ugly and it was alive. She pinned it to the form anyway and cut petals from it, layering them the way her mother had folded paper roses for the funerals in Deal.
On Saturday the band played a slow foxtrot and the floor filled with couples turning under the chandeliers. Vera watched from the cloakroom hatch, counting coats, until a girl in the dress stopped beneath the balcony light. The silk caught every colour in the room and threw it back, and the black thread stitched round the hem made dark leaves that looked like a border of night.
Nobody asked where the colours came from. Vera kept quiet about the ruined vat and the hour she'd spent scrubbing her knuckles raw, and let the girl turn once more under the lights.
