My Hope script with green splashes on calf
Lettering · Calf · Colour · Photo
The tattoo reads My Hope... in black cursive script with looping capitals, set over a loose cloud of green and blue splashes. Green and blue drips run down the lower part of the design. The lettering sits near the centre of the calf, with the paint-like splashes spreading out around it and the photo taken in a studio with a grey floor behind.

Dear Nell, the new sign went up on Tuesday, and I have to tell you the first coat ran before I'd finished the M. Green on the bottom of a fascia board, two cans of it, because you said nobody trusts a bakery painted in beige. I stood on the step at five in the morning with a mahl stick and a brush no thicker than a pencil, trying to keep the loops of the y still while the paint made up its own mind.

Mr Okafor watched from the doorway with his tea going cold. He has been baking in that oven since before the council had a name for this street, and he told me the lettering was too fancy for a loaf of bread. I said the bread would have to forgive it. The words he wanted over the door were the ones his wife used to shout up the stairs when the dough refused to rise, and I thought that was a fair thing to paint on a shop that opens before the buses. So I wrote it out in black, the swirls first, then let the green and blue go wherever they liked, which turned out to be down.
By half six the flour was on everything and the window had gone pale with steam. A van pulled in, a woman in a yellow coat read the sign twice with her lips moving, then came inside and bought four rolls without asking the price. Mr Okafor said nothing, but he shifted the chalkboard so it sat right under the drips, as if they had always been on the menu.
The paint has dried now, shiny in the first light, and I've decided not to touch it. Come and see it before summer, and bring the bad coffee so I can complain about it properly. Love, Mae.
