Navy circle with cream swirl design

Colour · Flash

The image shows two square panels, each with a dark navy circle containing a cream spiral design made of curling, interlinked swirls. The two designs are identical and sit centred on a pale cream square against a textured, woven fabric backdrop. The flat colour fills and smooth curves are clearly defined, with even lighting and a plain composition.

Teodor had cut the swirl into the brass matrix three times before Mrs Achterberg would accept it, each time complaining that the tails curled too tight, like the ends of a fern that had given up. On the fourth attempt she pressed her thumb into a test square of wax, lifted it away, and nodded once.

Two sticks of sealing wax, navy as a winter harbour, sat on the bench beside the bone folder. The wedding was on Saturday, and she wanted two identical seals, one for the bride's invitations and one for the groom's, so that neither family could say theirs had been the lesser. Teodor cut the cream card squares himself, pressed the seals one after another, and counted the strokes under his breath the way his father had taught him to count stitches.

On Friday night the rain came sideways off the canal and the gas heater ticked. He held the two impressions up to the lamp and found his mistake: the lower spiral on the second seal ended a hair short of the first. Nobody would have seen it. He could have let it go. Instead he took the fine file from its drawer and spent two hours bringing that one curl into line, until the two were the same again.

On Saturday the envelopes went out sealed and the wedding passed without anyone remarking on the seals. Teodor walked home past the locks with a spare test square still in his coat pocket, the wax gone hard and cool, the swirl pressed into it like a small coiled thing he had decided to keep.
