Nerd Pride and USB symbols on two fingers

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

Two hands are pressed together, with a black USB symbol and a word tattooed on each of two adjacent fingers. The words Nerd and Pride run vertically beneath the symbols in a bold, blocky typeface with clean, solid outlines. The ink is black against pale skin, with a plain blue background and softly lit hands.

The stick had been in Mrs Okafor's handbag for nine years, and nobody in the repair shop on Mill Lane could say what was on it. Dev held it up to the window like a jeweller checking a stone. Tomas, who had built the shop's first website on a dare and never let anyone forget it, said the drive was probably full of spreadsheets and bad poetry.

Mrs Okafor had asked for one thing. Her late husband had kept the village allotment accounts on it, forty years of marrows and rent, and she wanted the numbers before the council audit came. Dev said the plug was the wrong shape for the port. Tomas said everything was the wrong shape if you were in a hurry. They argued about which way the little arrow on the connector pointed, and whether a symbol could be trusted to tell you the truth about what lay inside.

It went in on the third try, upside down. The folder list loaded slowly, line by line, and at the bottom sat a single file named PLEASE_READ with no extension at all. Inside was a letter typed on a machine that had lost its R, asking whoever found it to forgive him for the marrows, and to give the allotment to the girl who grew sweet peas by the gate.

Dev printed the letter and took it round in a paper bag. Tomas kept the stick. It still sits on the shelf above the kettle, plugged into nothing, because some things are only worth keeping once you know where they fit.
