Bass and treble clef tattoos on wrists

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two wrists are shown side by side, one turned so the palm faces the viewer and the other angled slightly. A small bass clef sits on the left wrist and a treble clef on the right, both in solid black ink. The linework is thin and clean against the skin, and the plain white background keeps the focus on the two matching designs.

The piano in the back room of the shop had been out of tune since the flood, and Mrs Ada Hollins refused to let anyone touch it until her two boys agreed on something. They never did. Reuben took the low end, the left hand and the rumbling bass, and Tom took the melody above it, and for eleven years the arrangement held because neither would sit where the other had sat.

The summer Tom got the offer from a conservatoire in Glasgow, the argument was about the piano itself. Reuben wanted it kept in Leeds. Tom said a piano that only plays half of itself is a lie you tell the room. They sat on the bench with their shoulders touching, the way their father had taught them before recitals, and neither said anything for a long time.

On the morning of the move, the removal men arrived with a trolley and a tape measure. Reuben had come in early and tuned the bass strings himself, badly, humming to cover the mistakes. When Tom walked in he found a sheet of manuscript paper weighted under the lid, a left-hand part written out in pencil, and above it, in Reuben's careless hand, a single line: play the top, I'll follow.

Tom sat down, set his right hand on the treble, and waited. The low notes came up through the floorboards a beat behind him, exactly where they belonged. He played until the men at the door gave up on their trolley and leaned against the frame to listen, and the piano did not leave the room until the song was finished.
